Child Abuse AwarenessMarch 20, 2012
AtG was part of a press conference this morning at Legislative Plaza to raise awareness for evidence-based programs that work to prevent child abuse and reduce the chance of a child becoming an at-risk child. It makes more fiscal sense to prevent child abuse and neglect than pay for foster care, counseling, rehabilitation services and incarceration. A family can receive early childhood assistance for less than $2,500 but foster care costs over $8,000 per year, incarcerating a juvenile costs $88,000/year and incarcerating an adult is $15,000/year. Prevention is cheaper than punishment.
