Against the Grain to Open Training Center

December 28, 2012

As many of you know, Against the Grain has had a longstanding relationship with Brothers’ Pizza Company. Devin Cundall founded Brothers’ with a vision to support the work of ministries both locally and internationally. Devin has stayed true to his vision with his generous donations locally and by providing food for children in third world countries through the Feed Yourself, Feed the World Program.

When the economy got tight in 2009, I accepted a management position with Brothers’; which allowed Meredith to continue to serve at AtG. I stayed on with Brothers until January of 2011, when I returned to Against the Grain. Even when I left Brothers’, our relationship continued to grow as we have similar hearts to minister to hurting people. And although many have questioned the relationship, Devin is not my actual brother, but we do share a vision to change the world for Christ.

Several of AtG’s graduates have worked at Brothers’ and Connie, the manager, is a shining example of the success of that partnership. Over the last few months we have had several conversations of how we can deepen our relationship and provide additional training and employment opportunities to those we serve. We began to see the natural progression as all the pieces seemed to fall into place. After a lot of conversations, more emails and even more prayer, Against the Grain’s Board of Directors unanimously voted to move forward with a formal partnership between AtG and Brothers’ Pizza Company.

So it is with great pleasure that I am able to make the following announcement. On December 31, at 11:59 pm, Against the Grain will take ownership of Brothers’ Pizza Company as a continuation and expansion of the services we currently offer to men, women and children who are struggling to overcome the affects of abuse, addiction and negative cycles. Brothers will continue to provide incredible pizza, pasta, salads and subs, but will now also provide training opportunities for our neighbors who need a little help getting their lives back on track.

The Feed Yourself Feed the World Program will continue to provide food for children in Nicaragua and Haiti, and the Dominican Republic will also be added to the areas impacted. As a continuation of AtG’s vision for providing ways for people to independently provide for themselves, the Feed Yourself Feed the World Program will expand to begin offering training and services to provide sustainability to the people that are currently served. We will be making annual trips to distribute food and set up programs for the villagers to independently provide for themselves. Devin will remain involved on an advisory basis and provide leadership to the Feed Yourself Feed the World Program.

Our clients will now have a place to begin to put into practice the lessons they have been learning. Each staff member will go through The New Beginning Study, Budgeting 101, a Jobs Readiness Program and AtG’s Leadership Program. After completion of these classes and a time of solid employment, they will be ready to move forward to work with other companies and continue on in their careers. While this is exciting news and we are looking forward to increasing the impact of Against the Grain, we need your help.

While the long-term objective is for Brothers’ to actually provide a sustainable income stream for AtG, there are many expenses involved with running a business that we will incur starting January 1, 2013. We need to raise $25,000 of Seed Money to be used as operating capital to get us started on the right track.

While we certainly need, and are seeking out, large donations; every penny will help. Any gift, big or small, can have a significant impact and provide hope to those we serve. I am also asking you to consider supporting Brothers’ with your pizza purchases. Really, how much better does it get? Great pizza that operates as the hands and feet of Christ; it truly is Pizza with a Purpose. Your tax-deductable donations can be made here or mailed to Against the Grain, P.O. Box 809, Franklin, TN 37065. Thanks so much for your support and we look forward to serving you.
