AtG's inclement weather policy is to cancel classes if either Williamson County or Franklin Special School District are closed.  Both districts closed today so we will not have the 180 class at the AtG offices this evening.

Christmas Break is finally over and classes got started back this week.  We had all the girls from last semester back plus 6 new moms for this semester.  It was an awesome week.  Earlier this month a group from The Journey Church volunteered their time and resources to completely update a trailer for one of our moms.  It was like Extreme Makeover - Trailer Edition.  This mother had been unable...read article >>

It is so interesting seeing the transformation process that the moms go through.  They often take two steps forward and one step back and often they take several steps backwards all at once.  It has been an up and down journey for Shareta as she began to gain confidence in herself and believe that she could achieve great things in her life.  On Friday, December 12, Shareta graduated from Kaplan Institute with a degree as a...read article >>

Sheri Dudley has been a member of the Board of Directors for 3 1/2 years and has been an incredible leader.  She is a Master Social Worker and understands the unique challenges that single mothers face from her work experience and her own experiences as a single mother.  Sheri is now married and has 2 children.  Sheri will be the Board chair for a 2 year term.  We would like to thank Bill Wright for his service and...read article >>

We are getting hit with snow in Franklin and the temperature is dropping.  We are canceling class because we do not want our moms driving with the potential of black ice.  Many of their cars are old and not kept up with new tires and really good brakes.  Next week we will have the Christmas Shoppe at 4th Ave. Church.

That's right, Demetrics is one of the AtG kids.  In fact, his mother just received the Single Mother of the Year Award.  He is the Math Student of the Week at Brentwood High school.  I am not sure if he is the student of the week for just his grade or the whole school, but we wanted to take a minute to honor him. Great job D...keep up the good work.

Thursday night we had a great turnout for the 5th Annual Dinner and Silent Auction.  Once again, Famous Dave's hit a homerun with the food.  Thanks to our sponsors - Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) Street Tuxedo's - Rental and Sales, Orion Techologies, Knowledge Point, Williamson Medical Center and The People's Church...your support helped tremendously.  Thanks also to Joe at the Musicians Hall of Fame who...read article >>

This summer AtG held a 5 week literacy camp for 50 children.  It was one of the most frustrating and rewarding things we have ever done.  We had one young man who could not pay attention and continued to distrupt his class and so he was permanently removed from the class.  He spent his summer working one-on-one with volunteers and when we did not have an extra volunteer available, I worked with him.  Last week Meredith was...read article >>

Well we ended our summer strong and are finally settling into a more normal routine.  We are about to graduate a group of 5 moms in a few weeks.  For the last year they have participated in group training as well as individual sessions with mentors.  They will continue to meet with the mentors for another year to follow up and implement their individual plans for independence.   Looking back, it is amazing...read article >>

I realized that I had not updated this in a couple of months.  We have been very busy with a new group of moms starting up and preparing for Freedom Schools for the kids.
Today we end week three of Freedom Schools which is the summer portion of the year-round Reach & Teach program. Freedom Schools is a five week literacy camp which also focuses on character development, leadership skills, team building exercises and a whole lot...read article >>

Before you get worried that we have seen aliens, this was an amazing invasion.  Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, KY had a retreat in Nashville May 16 - 18 for their 20 something group and sent 100 volunteers to Franklin to serve the community.  Saturday, from 9 - 12 they cleaned houses, organized, re-arranged furniture, landscaped and completely cleaned out the tutoring center.  In total, there were 19 projects that...read article >>

The school year is ending and Reach & Teach is preparing to shift from the school-year tutoring to the 5 week summer program.  To celebrate the kids efforts throughtout the school year we had a picnic.  On May 5, the children of Reach & Teach and their parents joined AtG staff and volunteers for a great time of food and fun in Strahl Park.  We had a great time...eating, playing games and getting to know some of the...read article >>

We have been very busy over the last couple of weeks.  We started with an evening of Laser Chase and pizza with the boys and mentors (thank you Dave and Adam at Laser Chase for donating the games).  6 boys with 6 men had a great time shooting each other and then stuffing ourselves with pizza.  Last weekend we had 4 different activities.  Friday night started with a community group from Fellowship Bible Church which held a...read article >>

Several weeks ago 2 men approached me and said "you all do a lot of stuff for the moms, but you don't offer anything for us".  I was a little suprised because I had never even thought about it.  After working through some of the details, we agreed to take them through our Job's for Life curriculum.  Last night, we had a celebration as these 2 men were the first to graduate from an AtG class offered...read article >>
